Now that we’re at the height of summer travel season, we want to call your attention to the architecture around you: that of the airport. Enjoy while you can, because it may be on the brink of demolition, no matter how beloved it might have been, or how lavish the spending at its origin (e.g. Eero Saarinen’s TWA terminal design didn’t completely survive JetBlue’s efforts at rehab—although it lives on in the film, Catch Me If You Can—and its signature sweeping curves serve as one of JetBlue’s logos). Airports are notorious agents of change, and some special places have been lost, or are currently on the endangered list.

Our current faves include Denver (see our past ARTExpress issue extolling its virtures), Bilbao, Singapore, Madrid and Tokyo… What are your favorites? Where is a makeover most needed? Let us know your thoughts.

If you’re headed to Rome, ARTExpress has a couple of suggestions for your must-see list. Since its December opening, the White Gallery life-style, shopping, exhibition and dining complex in Piazza Marconi has caused quite a stir. Three stunning floors house numerous exhibition spaces, four restaurants, and luxury retailers, including Yogi Yamamoto, Jill Sander, Stella McCartney… and more. The centerpiece is a light sculpture called The Fluxus, by renowned designer Karim Rashid and artist Michela Vianello. In five colors, studded with sparkling halogen lights, it is an undulating ceiling made of woven Murano glass. Suspended and fluid, it flows above your head creating a truly magical environment.
